CABIN AIR FILTER FAQ

CABIN AIR FILTER FAQ

What is a cabin air filter and what does it do for your vehicle?

Cabin air filters can help reduce dust, pollen and airborne particles from air entering the cabin through vehicles' heating and air conditioning systems. Specialty filters, such as Carbon Activated or N95 filters, also provide additional odor or bacteria filtration.

Is a cabin filter the same as an A/C filter?

In the context of vehicle maintenance, these terms are often used interchangeably because the cabin air filter cleans air before it enters the HVAC vents in the vehicle. However, cabin air filters and appliance A/C filters are not interchangeable.

What happens if you don’t change your cabin air filter?

A worn out or clogged cabin air filter will restrict air flow and filtering efficiency. Effects of this include:

  • Reduced airflow from HVAC vents
  • Persistent odors
  • Fogged windows
  • Increased allergy or respiratory irritation

How often do I need to change or replace my cabin air filter?

Typically, it is recommended to replace your cabin air filter every 15,000 miles or once per year. However, regular driving in heavy traffic, poor air quality, high dust levels or high-allergen regions may require more frequent replacement. Refer to your vehicle Owner’s Manual for your vehicle’s specific maintenance schedule.

How do I replace my cabin air filter?

For a visual guide, you can watch this GM cabin air filter installation video. Before beginning any job, always check your vehicle Owner’s Manual for any guidance specific to your make and model.

  1. If cabin is plagued by musty smells, foggy windows, loud fans or excessive dust, it could be time to replace your filter.
  2. Remove the instrument panel compartment door (also known as the glove box).
  3. If vehicle is equipped with passenger compartment air filter housing cover screws, remove them.
  4. Open the filter compartment door and remove the old filter.
  5. Install the new filter where you removed the old one and close the door.
  6. If you removed any housing screws when opening the compartment, be sure to put them back in place.
  7. Replace and close the instrument panel compartment door.

What size cabin air filter do I need?

You can check your vehicle Owner’s Manual for information on exactly what type and size of cabin air filter your vehicle needs.

Where can I buy cabin air filters near me?

You can purchase cabin air filters from:

  • GM Dealerships
  • Auto parts stores such as AutoZone®, NAPA® or O’Reilly®
  • The GM Parts Store

Can a dirty cabin air filter cause bad smells or weak AC airflow?

Cabin air filters will wear out over time and become dirty, clogged or ineffective. When this happens, airflow can become restricted in the worn-out filter, and its ability to trap or reduce odors can also be negatively impacted.

Does a dirty cabin air filter affect allergies or air quality inside the car?

The cabin air filter cleans the air entering your vehicle’s interior through the HVAC system. When it’s old or clogged, it can’t filter effectively — potentially allowing more pollen and allergens into the cabin.

What’s the difference between an engine air filter and a cabin air filter?

The engine air filter helps trap airborne particles before they enter the engine and minimize airflow restriction to the engine. Cabin air filters help trap certain outside particles before they reach the vehicle’s interior ventilation system.
